Congratulations to this years recipient Ava Nesbitt!!

Ava is a graduating senior from Haddon Township who has used art as a way to explore identity, personal growth, and all the messy, beautiful complexities that come with being human. Her ceramic piece Wavering captures that exact feeling — the in-between space of uncertainty and transformation.

“Art has always been a constant in my life but the form has grown with me. My art piece, Wavering, is similar to my relationship with art; the ceramic piece is an illusion of movement and I see art the same way, moving. This timeline first started before I had my choice of art classes. From 1st to 8th grade I would spend my time at home making my own entertainment. I would create cardboard vending machines, props for my dolls, jewelry, and sail boats out of milk cartoons. While in school I would constantly be caught doodling in a notebook, at times being told to put it away. During my younger teens, art has allowed me to express myself. I’ve been known to be a very quiet, and sometimes anxious person and choose to steer away from most attention. Through art I can show others who I am as a person and avoid the attention brought with self expression. Once I entered highschool and could choose my own art classes, I took a class that involved painting and drawing. I felt like creating images on paper never fit me, and felt sort of out of place in the 2 years I took this class. These same years, I began to figure out who I am as a person and my place in Haddon Township. Then, I took ceramics and the median truly spoke to me as an artist. I never felt out of place, working with the clay felt natural. As my love of art medians changed, I as a person changed. I truly feel my piece sums up who I am as an artist and a person. From the ages of 5 to 18 my relationship with creation has been fluid, I've gone from cardboard to paper to clay and many other medians in between. My piece symbolizes the development of my love for the arts and the unpredictability to come in the future.”

This fall, Ava heads to The College of New Jersey to study Data Science and Statistics — so yes, she’s got both the creativity and analytical chops to go far. But here at SoHa, we’re celebrating her heart, which she’s shared so honestly through her art.

Ava, we’re so proud of you. And we can’t wait to see what you create next — in clay, in code, or wherever life takes you.

Scholarship Vision and Impact:

Art opens doors to dialogues that might otherwise remain closed. Through art, we all can tackle complex themes related to personal growth, expression and identity; encouraging broader engagement and understanding within the community.

This scholarship aims to empower a Haddon Township graduate by providing them with the resources to express their narratives, challenges, and triumphs. It's an investment in voices that advocate for bridging gaps and fostering connection.

Beyond individual support, the scholarship fosters a sense of community and shared purpose. It acknowledges the collective journey of artists and allies who are striving to make a difference through their creativity and passion.

By spotlighting and supporting art, the scholarship underlines the belief that art is not just a reflection of society but a tool to reshape it.
